I'm sure there are a lot out there who use web email; yahoo, hotmail, etc. I have an account with excite.com for all contacts with gaming sites. Had this account for years, so had not checked or updated my personal info. Got a scare recently when I tried to log in and it wouldn't accept the password. I can hit a wrong key once or even twice, but not three times.
Clicked to retrieve a new password, and it showed an email address at a former employer that went bankrupt years ago. That was the only way they could send a new password. If that didn't work, the account and all info would be lost. The big problem was not what I knew would be lost. But after so many years, I didn't really know what I would lose.
Fortunately it was a temp glitch or something and I could log in without problem a couple hours later.
Same/similar thing happened some years ago with a Yahoo account that was also many years old, only that time I kept trying, since I knew the password was right. After a number of tried, the account was locked. OK, no problem, just ask me the secret question and open it again. What do you want to know ... Mother's maiden name? Pet's name? What color my hair used to be?
Not only did I have to know the answer, I had to tell them what the question was! Of course, I had no idea so that account was locked, and I lost contact with several good net friends.
If you use one of these accounts, you might want to make sure that your personal inf is current. May save some grief ...
