Why call?
« on: October 18, 2005, 07:23:57 AM »
I played in the porkerloons tourny at Noble last night. I was in late position with AQ off suit. I only called the blind of 30. Big blind raised it to 100 I called flop comes A9Q. Player that was Big blind is a member here chopps1 he bets 200 and I call. Turn card is a 2 no possible flushes or straights on the board. Chopps1 bets 200 I raise to all in and he calls. Cards flip he has 89 offsuit and wouldn't you know the river was a 9.

So why would any one that knows how to play make that call. Chopps1 had 2 outs and less than a 5% chance of hitting his card. Just because you hace a small part of the flop doesn't give you the hand.

Yes I know it was a freeroll. Players that play that way just because its a freeroll are not going to become a better poker player. These private forum freerolls give players a chance to play in tournaments and improve thier game against players without the freeroller mentality. I know I started this to provide information to players and help them improve thier poker game.

For what it's worth I wouldn't have called either. Even with a pair ( with the lowest card of the flop ) he/she only has a 9 kicker. You could have had q9 or a9 for that matter.

It is really bad poker, but Don is right -freeroll.  If it was a $50 freeroll most players do not care.

He was in the Big Blind and some players will defend thier blind beyond all reason. No way he should call. Happens a lot though.

hi know how you feel. i just joined this form, i used to belong at another one and quite because it had so many bad players or players who don't care how they play freerolls so i joined this one hoping it would be differant, boy i was i wrong lol. i was in a freeroll toury for this forum and what happens i get hung by someone. i had pocket QQ and someone bets 30 chips before flop and i raise 600 two players call not the dealer or big blind or small blind. flop comes J 4 5 all off suite so i bet 1200 more the turn is a 9 so i go all in get one call  river is 2 and behold i get beat with two pair jacks and fours why would someone even call with a J 4 off suite when someone raises 20 times the antie preflop. well it seems to me that all forums have players who are just dumb or don't care how they play. Dont get me wrong i dont mind loseing but when you lose like that it is just pittyfull to see some one call with crap.  well i guess if it werent for nuts we wouldn't have what we call so many bad beats. well good luck and have fun all.

It's hard to get used to, but you have to accept it, in freerolls, and even in buy-in tournaments, there are just some terrible players or players that just dont care.  Also consider that people do have "favorite" cards, and if they think they are going to hit, they will stick with them. And what was the chip stack and position of the player that had J4 ? they may have just been playing position and had the stack to call. There are  many possibilities and reason they could have played it. I personally think it was a bad move, I wouldnt play J4 os in any position, unless it was heads up.

Dont be discouraged!! Your time will come!  8)
