House passes online gambling restrictions

The House passed legislation Tuesday that would prevent gamblers from using credit cards to bet online and could block access to gambling Web sites.

The legislation would clarify and update current law to spell out that most gambling is illegal online. But there would be exceptions -- for state-run lotteries and horse racing -- and passage isn't a safe bet in the Senate, where Republican leaders have not considered the measure a high priority.

The casino's are  lobbying verry hard and spending alot of money to get this passed.

Watch and see!!

I predict the bill won't pass. This is just a big scare on something they could never stop. Watch and see what will get passed is a tax on winnings. Then they will say it was great they could save on-line gambling for us.

As a Canadian, I am only indirectly affected by the legislationbut encourage all Americans to fight this bill.  It will only benefit the owners of land based casinos and only in the short term.  Online gambling has brought millions of people to the tables who may never have taken up the pursuit.  The goal of most of these players is play in a live game so the land based casinos are the big winner.

Instead of other law that restricts freedom of  choice, the law should be amended to allow American based casinos to open fully regulated online casinos in the US.

Het Buc, if the law does pass prohibiting online gambling in the US- PM me.   Canadians have always stood ready to help their American friends during periods of prohibition.

 While they may make it illegal to use credit cards - will they pass a complete prohibition. Actually, this would be a really stupid law and demonstrate a fundamental lack of understanding about how the Net works.
